Gregory's girl
Released; 1980
Location; Cumbernauld, Scotland, UK.
Released in 1980, Gregory’s girl was the second feature by director Bill Forsyth. This was originally penned to be his first film but after the BFI refused to grant him funding on the basis that the script was too commercial he went away and made That Sinking feeling which was successful enough to provide the funding needed to start work on Gregory’s girl.
Filming took place in the “new town” of Cumbernauld just outside Glasgow.
Now recognized as a classic and featuring in the top 30 British made films of all time this heart warming tale of boy sees girl, boy arranges date with girl but meets 3 other girls before ending up with the right girl is a must for any DVD collection.
I have visited this project on a couple of occasions. I first traced the outdoor locations in 2009 and it was one of my earliest sets. In 2012 when it was announced that Abronhill high, the school used in the film was to be demolished I set out to visit the indoor locations before they vanished for ever and with the help of a local film maker we were granted free access to the inside of the school buildings the day before the demolition company took possession of the land.
I hope you enjoy the videos and picture sets below and if you have any connection to the film please get in touch and let me know.
